Shane Williams could have played his last RBS 6 Nations match after it was confirmed he was set to miss the rest of the season.

Wales’ record try scorer, who hinted after the Ireland game that the France clash would be his last in the Tournament, picked up a knee injury in the win over Ireland and has ligament damage.

A scan has revealed the injury is more serious than first thought and Williams will now concentrate on regaining his fitness for World Cup selection.

Scarlets star George North, who stole the show in the autumn internationals, is set to replace Williams in Paris after being called into the squad as cover.

“Shane will be out of action for a period of six to eight weeks after sustaining damage to the posterior cruciate ligament in his left knee during the match at the weekend,” said Wales ’ medical manager Prav Mathema.

“Thankfully there is no need for surgical intervention.”
