Under-20s Six Nations Grand Slam champions England moved to within touching distance of a semi-final spot at the World Rugby Under-20s Championship after a second win of the campaign in Georgia.

England were 34-22 winners over Wales, and now have a maximum ten points from their first two games ahead of a final pool match against Australia.

Victory in that match would wrap up top spot in the pool and a place in the final four, where they could be joined by another Six Nations side.

A late win for France over Argentina puts them on six points, a point behind Australia in Pool C, ahead of a final pool game against hosts Georgia, while Scotland and Italy are also still in contention to make the last four.

The Scots edged out Ireland 32-28 in a thrilling encounter, Darcy Graham bursting through the Irish defence with a phenomenal drive before passing it to Ross McCann who dotted down for one of the tries of the tournament.

Graham capped off his fine display with a second-half try as Fraser Renwick, Robbie Nairn and Conor Eastgate also went over to help Scotland pick up their first win of the competition.

Scotland captain Callum Hunter-Hill said: “We’re really happy. I am really proud of all the guys and I think we showed a lot of composure to be able to come out with a win.

“Ireland came out with a lot of fight and had nothing to lose, they played brilliantly so a lot of credit goes to them. But I have to give it to our backs especially.

“Now we to recover, our training has been fantastic, we have really coped well with the heat so making sure are prepared will be our main focus.”

Next up they face an Italy team who were strong in attack against New Zealand, but struggled to slow down the Baby Blacks in defence in a 68-26 defeat.

A bonus point success for either side would give them a shot of progressing, with the group winners being joined by the best runners-up in the semi-finals, although they would need other results to go their way.

France are in a better position, with six points already, and a bonus-point success against Georgia would likely see them through following their 26-25 win over Argentina.

Replacement prop Ugo Boniface went over twice in the second half, including with the final play of the game, to seal the vital win.
