In Pau, defending champions England held off France in a pulsating encounter that twisted and turned this way and that.

Elsewhere, 2019 runners up Italy held off a late Wales fightback at Cardiff Arms Park as the visitors enjoyed much of the possession but could not finish off the spirited hosts for large parts of the contest.

Meanwhile, Ireland narrowly beat Scotland to complete a trio of fascinating battles – as Emma Wassell’s late try with four minutes left made for a hectic finale.

Round 2 looks just as tantalising with Italy travelling to Limoges to take on France, Scotland hosting bitter rivals England at Scotstoun and Ireland once again at Energia Park as they face Wales.
