England scrum-half Leanne Riley says the chance to break down barriers and perceptions makes representing her country an “exciting time” as she looks forward to welcoming Wales to her club ground.
The Harlequins ace started her first game in the Women’s Six Nations in last weekend’s 27-0 success over Ireland after featuring off the bench in the opener against France.
England are two victories away from claiming back-to-back Grand Slam titles and Riley says she is excited to inspire the next generation of Red Roses at Twickenham Stoop when Wales arrive on Saturday, March 7.
“I enjoy and love to see fans coming to the sport as it’s good to break down barriers and perception,” the 26-year-old told Richmond & Twickenham Times.
“It’s exciting to see where it can go and how far we have come.
“I think rugby is about having the confidence to step on a pitch and express yourself.
“It’s not for everyone but I would tell young girls who are curious about rugby to be themselves, listen to their coaches and to get a grip of the game.”
England head into their encounter against Wales having not lost a Championship match at home since 2015.
And Riley, who made her international debut in 2013 after impressing in the Sevens set-up, says the defending champions are as motivated as ever.
“It is an exciting time, though we had a tough time away playing against France,” Riley added.
“You never want to be the team that loses – and everyone goes out and enjoys themselves.
“We play rugby because we love the sport and it’s amazing to play along with your best people – yes we are playing for our country but at the same time we are very competitive.”
