Scotland scrum-half Ben White has won the 2022 Guinness Six Nations Try of Round 1 after finishing off his side’s brilliant, quick-thinking score during their historic win over England.
Not since 1984 had Scotland won consecutive Calcutta Cup clashes but they ended that streak in style with a dramatic 20-17 victory at BT Murrayfield and White’s first-half try was a key reason why.
Off the bench for his international debut as first-choice No.9 Ali Price was being assessed for an HIA, the scrum-half took just five minutes to write his name into Scotland lore by finishing off a 17th-minute move that was started on the training ground.
Scotland caught England cold with a quickly-taken lineout on halfway following Ben Youngs’ box-kick and after Sam Johnson carried hard into contact, they pounced on an over-matched defence.

Faced with two locks, a prop and a scrum-half down the blindside, first receiver Stuart Hogg drew contact and fed Darcy Graham, who drifted past a couple of defenders, put on the afterburners, danced past Joe Marchant and flicked a pass inside for the supporting White to dot down.
It was a try to light up any Guinness Six Nations and is deservedly named as Try of the Round following a fan vote.
White’s brilliance earned 41% of the vote, with Garry Ringrose’s scything, arcing score during Ireland’s victory over Wales coming in second with 30%.
Italy debutant Tommaso Menoncello came third with 19% after he acrobatically dotted down Paolo Garbisi’s cross-kick, while Damian Penaud’s exhibition of pace got 10%.
But nothing could overhaul White’s terrific touch down, as he kickstarted the 2022 Guinness Six Nations with a bang.
