Owen Farrell believes England’s 2020 Six Nations triumph is just the beginning of their journey and has urged his side to kick on from their success in the Autumn Nations Cup.
Farrell and his troops were crowned champions after a 34-5 victory over Italy was enough to edge out France on points difference, giving them their first Six Nations title since 2017.
It marks the perfect response from Eddie Jones’ side, who have bounced back from losing out to South Africa in the Rugby World Cup Final in 2019 with a string of dominant performances.
And Farrell is adamant that there is a lot more to come from his compatriots, with clashes against Georgia, Ireland and Wales all on the horizon as the Autumn Nations Cup gets underway this weekend.
“It is important to kick on. Definitely. Obviously winning a trophy is a by-product of that,” the England captain said.
“That’s really exciting moving forward into this next competition and through to next weekend.
“It was good to get another trophy with this group and perform as we did throughout the Six Nations, but now is the time to look ahead and really get stuck into it.”
England will start the inaugural Autumn Nations Cup this weekend by hosting Georgia at Twickenham, as they look to get their competition off to a flying start.
Saturday will be the first time they have come up against the Lelos since a 41-10 victory back in 2011, with interim head coach Levan Maisashvili sure to have his side fired up for the trip to London.
Ireland will be next to visit Rugby HQ the following week, in what is likely to be one of the matches of the tournament, before Jones will take his side to Llanelli to face Wales in their final match of the group.
Despite three physical matches coming in quick succession, Farrell believes his side’s showings this year have only shown a glimmer of their potential, and is expecting big things to come from the current crop of talent they have.
“Winning trophies is an outcome of making sure the boys come in and get together and kick on as a group,” Farrell said.
“I feel like we are going in that direction, the most exciting thing is that we still have loads more left in us.
“The most exciting thing about the performance against Italy was that I thought we prepared really well and we got some big bits right but at the same time it felt as if there was a lot more in us. A lot more.”
