Five Minutes with Cameron Winnett

Cam winnett
We sat down with Cardiff and Wales fullback Cam Winnett, recently named the Welsh Rugby Writers’ Association’s Young Player of the Year.

Ahead of an Autumn Nations Series campaig that sees Wales take on Fiji, Australia and South Africa - all live on TNT Sports - he discusses his meteoric rise through the ranks, the feeling of making his Test debut, and who makes the worst flat white in camp.

What was the feeling like when you got your first cap for Wales?

You’re from Wattstown in the Rhondda. When you take to the field do you feel like you are representing the Valleys?

Yeah, definitely. Rhondda is a big place for rugby, but not many of us come from there. So when I take to the field, I feel like I have to represent them and do them proud!

Coffee of choice?

Flat White. Standard, really.

Who makes the best and worst flat white in camp?

The best would have to be Tomos Williams. He’s always up there, and the worst would have to be Mason Grady. He’s shocking.

Who would play you in a biopic?

I love Adam Sandler, so I would have to say him.

Is there a player you wish you could have played with?

I would love to have played with [Springboks fullback] Willie le Roux. He was my favourite player growing up.

And who are you glad to have never played against?

Nemani Nadolo. He’s huge. I would hate having him run at me.

What is something people would be surprised to learn about you?

I loved my football growing up, but aged 14 I had to make a choice over which sport to continue with.

If you could play any other position, what would it be?

The other position would be no.10. There are a lot of transferable skills, and for the way I play 10 would be ideal.

Favourite TV show?

Starting 5 on Netflix was unbelievable to watch, I hope they come out with more of them!

If you could be a professional sportsperson in another sport, what would you choose?

Football. Easy.

The player with the best and worst fashion sense in camp?

Worst has to go to Mason Grady! The best would have to be Josh Hathaway - he always dresses smart.

If you could have dinner with any three people alive or dead, who would they be?

Jürgen Klopp, Steven Gerrard, and Conor McGregor. That would be a good three.

Music of choice on game day?

The person who I listen to most would be Kanye West.

What does a perfect day off look like for you?

Not doing much. Maybe a nice coffee, chilling out, then play some Xbox.

What's your top three bucket list of things to do in your life?

1) Travel and see the wonders of the world. 2) See Liverpool lift the Premier League trophy in person. 3) Sky Dive.

Which Wales and Cardiff teammate would you take backpacking across the world with you?

Wales would be Mason Grady - we are pretty close. From Cardiff, it would be Alex Mann.

Favourite U20 Six Nations memory?

It would have to be the try we scored against Ireland. We threw three outrageous offloads and it was a game we should have won.

Rugby aspirations over the next 5 years?

The 2027 Rugby World Cup is definitely a goal, but the main one is to be playing consistently for Cardiff and Wales. I don’t like looking too far ahead. I just like playing what’s in front of me.
