Fin Smith
England and Northampton Saints fly-half Fin Smith reveals his quirky obsession with chewing things, shares unforgettable memories from earning his first cap, and gives us the inside scoop on his perfect day off!

Coffee of choice?

Flat white, always.

Who makes the best / worst coffee in camp?

Ben Spencer makes the best, that’s for sure. The worst is tough, there are a few bad ones, it would have to be Freddy Steward he makes a pretty bad coffee!

Who would play you in a biopic?

Maybe a young Matt Damon, I think we look fairly similar!

Is there a player you wish you could have played with?

Matt Giteau, he was just a naturally skilled playmaker, it would have been cool to play with him!

Who are you glad to have never played against?

It will have to be someone massive, like Ben Tameifuna.

What was the feeling like when you got your first cap for England? Who’s had the biggest influence on your career to date?

What is something people would be surprised to learn about you?

I am currently studying an economics and maths degree. I also have a really bad habit of chewing anything - bottle lids, plastic, pen lids, cardboard, you name it!

If you could play any other position, what would it be and why?

If I had a little bit more pace I would love to play fullback, it’s just like being 10, but you get more space to run in.

What TV show do you feel is overrated?

Friends, I think it sucks.

What’s your favourite TV show?

I love my reality TV, like Geordie Shore. I’m big on it.

If you could be a professional sportsperson in another sport, what would you choose and why?

Tennis was my big sport until I was about 12, I think it would be fun flying all over the world playing.

The player with the best and worst fashion sense in camp?

Ollie Lawrence is the best, because he spends all his money on it. The worst is Tommy Freeman, because all he does is wear gym kit.

If you could have dinner with any three people dead or alive, who would they be?

My grandad [Tom Elliot, who won 14 caps for Scotland]. I never got the chance to meet him. He was a British and Irish Lion so would have been cool to have a chat with him. Jack Grealish (I am a massive Villa fan). Then to round off the weird three it would be Drake; I think he would have some cool stories. A carnage three!

What’s your music of choice on game day?

Either American hip hop or country. I love Chris Stapleton.

What does a perfect day off look like for you?

Get up and head out for brekkie with the boys, then a sauna ice combo to get the body right. All the Northampton boys are big into escape rooms at the moment, so maybe smashing one of them out. Fit in a little nap, and then head out for padel and a Nando’s!

What are your top three bucket list of things to do outside of rugby?

1) Skydive. 2) Go to Las Vegas. 3) Watch UFC live in Las Vegas.

Which England teammate would you take backpacking across the world with you?

Chandler Cunningham-South. I went to Bali with him in the summer and he was the man of the trip, so I would say him.

Rugby aspirations over the next five years?

I would love to go the [2027] Rugby World Cup. I would love to push for a start or a place in the England 23, and really establish myself in the England squad.

Favourite U20 Six Nations memory?

During the 2021 U20 Six Nations, we played against France. We were losing by a lot at half-time but we came back and drilled them. It was my debut so it was pretty special.
