England’s Autumn Nations Cup clash with Ireland next weekend is their ‘most important game of the year’ according to head coach Eddie Jones.
The Red Rose may have kicked off their Autumn Nations Cup campaign with a comfortable 40-0 victory over Georgia but it appears attentions have already turned to a huge clash at Twickenham against Andy Farrell’s side on Saturday.
Ireland were impressive as they brushed Wales aside 32-9 in the tournament opener and Jones, who has had his fair share of battles with the Irish over the years, knows that a stiff test awaits – one which will go a long way to deciding how Group A pans out.
“We realise the Ireland game is going to be the most important game of the year,” Jones said.
“We’ll go away and have a good preparation. Ireland will be cock‑a‑hoop after their big win against Wales so they’ll come with plenty of confidence and swagger.”
Amid tricky conditions England were professional against Georgia, with Jamie George scoring a hat-trick as Jones’ plan of pack domination proved too much for the tier two nation.
Jack Willis also scored a try on debut while Elliot Daly and Dan Robson added further scores but, despite the shutout, Jones is adamant that his side will have to step up a gear against Ireland.
Recent history will be with England though, having beaten Ireland in their last three encounters including triumphing 24-12 at Twickenham on route to claiming this year’s Guinness Six Nations trophy.
Jones added: “Georgia produced a challenge in the set-piece and our set-piece cohesion was absolutely outstanding.
“We probably would have liked to have been a bit sharper in terms of our execution with the ball we won.
“We probably left another 20 points out there, but we are pretty happy with the display. I was delighted with the resolve and attitude of the side.
“Ireland will be a completely different game. I’d like us to execute a bit better.”
