Argentina spent a lot of time working on their defence this week and it paid off in spades as they got the better of Italy in Treviso.
Having lost their last seven matches, including last week’s defeat to France in Paris, Los Pumas ensured there would be no eighth loss as they scored five tries in a 37-16 victory over the Azzurri.
And for skipper Julian Montoya, who was a menace throughout at the breakdown, there were plenty of positives to take from the game.
He said: “I’m really happy about the effort of the team. The last couple of games have been good for us. We are working hard and today we can see the results against a tough team like Italy. It was a good Test match, we had a good week and we delivered. We need to keep on working because we don’t believe in excuses or short cuts. We must enjoy this win because we wanted it a lot but after enjoying this one we need to think about Ireland because we still have one more game and we need to give it all.
“We trained a lot during the week in our defence and I tried to put myself out there for the team. The team effort was great, I had some opportunities and some of the boys had opportunities too. We believed in our defence today and I think that was part of our victory so I’m happy to be part of this team.”
Argentina will now turn their attentions to Ireland as they travel to Dublin for their final match of the Autumn Nations Series.
And with their work at the breakdown and under the high ball in Treviso, Argentina will be hopeful of building on this success.
