A first international start led to a first international try for Louis Rees-Zammit.

Having made his debut coming off the bench against France last month, the 19-year-old continued his epic rise on the pitch in Wales’ Autumn Nations Cup victory against Georgia.

Wales were ahead through the boot of Callum Sheedy before Rees-Zammit dotted down at Parc y Scarlets after 25 minutes to notch his first international try.

The Gloucester wing picked up the ball on the left-hand side from Sheedy’s looped pass and made his way through the Georgia defence to touch down in the corner.

But that wasn’t his only involvement of the day with Rees-Zammit showing his counter-attacking flair to link up with Justin Tipuric, before the Welsh captain had to leave the field due to a head injury.

While the 19-year-old was also involved again as his inside pass to Rhys Webb led to Wales’ second try of the afternoon, which was enough to clinch an 18-0 victory.

Wayne Pivac made 13 changes from the side that lost 32-9 to Ireland in their opening contest of the Autumn Nations Cup.

Debuts were handed to Johnny Williams, Kieran Hardy, James Botham and Ioan Lloyd, as well as first Test starts for Sheedy and Rees-Zammit.

And the Wales head coach was pleased with how his young stars coped with difficult conditions in Llanelli.

“Johnny is very excited and he’s very pleased with his performance. I think in the conditions he did well,” Pivac said.

“Before you can go wide you have to go forward and Johnny was one of the guys who put us on the front foot by getting us over the gain-line. He had a really impressive game.

“It was very difficult, but to come away with a win was pleasing, particularly for the young guys who got a start. Young Ioan came off the bench with Callum also having his first start.

“I thought those boys all contributed well. In terms of the depth in the squad we’ve seen some players play for the first time and play reasonably well.

“From that point of view, it was pleasing.”
