Jacques Brunel heaped praise on Romain Ntamack’s game management after the teenager impressed in his first start at fly-half against Scotland.
The 19-year-old scored the opening try in the 27-10 success, and played a major role both in attack, and also defensively where he racked up 20 tackles in the game.
The performance vindicated Brunel’s decision to put his faith in the youngster, who will not turn 20 until May.
And Brunel was pleased at the way his young fly-half pulled the strings, with the help of a good platform from his forwards.
Brunel said: “He played really well. He got the team going well, he mixed things up. It wasn’t easy because this Scottish team put a lot of pressure on us, especially on the gain line.
“The forwards worked, as we had hoped they would, to put pressure on the defence before we gave the ball to the half-backs. And in those conditions, I think his performance was very good.
“We needed this win, but there is still a long road ahead. I’m pleased with the team in its entirety and the way they played. The Scots were not at full strength so we might face better teams in the coming weeks. We’ll see the value of this team in the weeks to come.”
It had been a tough run for France, losing eight of their last nine Tests, with Guilhem Guirado visibly relieved as they finished strongly to claim the bonus point.
And in front of a packed Stade de France, the French skipper was quick to pay tribute to the supporters.
He added: “It’s good to enjoy ourselves out there on the pitch. That’s what we managed to do and to show the supporters. I really want to thank the supporters.
“We’ve not had the stadium this full for a while with an atmosphere like that. I also like the way the team challenged itself. I was certain we would produce a great game. I’m pleased for the team and the coaches who have worked hard.”
