Five minutes with Fergus Burke

Fergus Burke - Rising Star
Saracens fly-half Fergus Burke gave us an insight into his rugby journey and life in the Scotland camp

Coffee of choice?

Flat white.

Who makes the best coffee in camp?

I’m a bit of a coffee snob, so I would say no one.

Is there a player you wish you could have played with?

Jonah Lomu.

Who are you glad to have never played against?

Manu Tuilagi.

What is something people would be surprised to learn about you?

I didn’t start playing rugby until I went to high school, aged 13.

If you could play any other position, what would it be?

Fullback. I have played a little bit. I guess the skills from fly-half correlate closely to fullback.

What TV show do you feel is overrated?

My girlfriend loves Love Island. I think it’s terrible!

What’s your favourite film?

Hacksaw Ridge.

If you could be a professional sportsperson in another sport, what would you choose?

Golf. It pays decent and it’s casual.

The player with the best and worst fashion sense in camp?

Finn [Russell] has the best. I would say Hutch [Rory Hutchinson] has the worst!

If you could have dinner with any three people dead or alive, who would they be?

Tiger Woods, Michael Jordan and the surfer Kelly Slater.

What’s your music of choice on game day?

Drum and bass.

What's the transition been like from Southern to Northern Hemisphere rugby?

It’s been different. The style of footy is a change. It has been cool, and I've learned a lot but I am feeling more comfortable every week.

What does a perfect day off look like for you?

Have a little lie-in, a quick breakfast and then head out to play 18 holes.

Which teammate would you take backpacking across the world with you?

From Scotland, I would choose Ben White, and from Sarries it would be Tom Willis.

What are your aims for this year's Guinness Men’s Six Nations Championship?

If I get the opportunity, it would be to take it! Other than that, it would be to learn as much as I can during the campaign.

Do you have a favourite Six Nations memory as a fan?

I was still out in New Zealand, but in 2021 when Scotland beat England for the Calcutta Cup, it was pretty cool to watch.

How much are you looking forward to learning from someone like Finn Russell?

He’s one of - if not the - best fly-halves in the world at the moment. He plays such a different style of footy to other 10s; being able to train with him and pick his brain is invaluable.

This is your first campaign in Test match rugby. How are you feeling?

This week has been unreal. It’s such a good environment where everyone is encouraged to be themselves. I've been made to feel very welcome, and the rugby has been cool.

For someone who's never watched rugby before, what would you say makes Scottish rugby distinct from others?

I would stay the style of play. It is there to excite crowds. It’s a running brand of footy so it’s as good as it gets!
