Saracens director of rugby Alan Gaffney could return to Irish rugby as Ireland’s new backs coach, having previously spent five years in Ireland with Leinster and Munster.
He is due to be succeeded at Saracens by former Australia coach Eddie Jones in May, but the club have intimated they would like him to stay involved on a part-time basis.
However, the former Wallabies assistant coach may be persuaded into taking a role with Ireland in readiness for their tour to New Zealand and Australia in June.
It was recommended that head coach Eddie O’Sullivan take on board someone to coach the backs following Ireland’s recent string of poor results during the World Cup.
Gaffney, who coached New South Wales alongside new Ulster coach Matt Williams, was popular during his time in Ireland, and could slot into the position quickly.
