Scotland lock Nathan Hines has been ruled out of the Lions’ second Test against South Africa after receiving a one-week ban for foul play.

The Perpignan second-rower was found guilty at a disciplinary hearing after being cited for an incident against the Emerging Springboks.

Judicial officer Alan Hudson deemed his tackle on Wilhelm Steenkamp, which was not spotted by referee Alain Rolland, worthy of punishment.

Hines – capped 58 times by Scotland – made his challenge on Steenkamp, who was unhurt, nine minutes into the second half the 13-13 draw in Cape Town.

Hines is the first Lions player to face disciplinary action with just two games left on the 10-match tour.

He was a candidate to come into the Lions’ match-day 22 for the second Test on Saturday in order to add some ballast to the pack as the Lions seek to square the series.
