The younger sibling, 30-year-old Mirco has not played for Italy since breaking his knee against Australia back in November 2012 – an injury which required a substantial period of rehabilitation.

But having impressed Azzurri head coach Jacques Brunel with his performances for Rovigo he was given a recall to the international team.

And with his older brother having earned a recall in his own right having missed last year’s tournament, Mirco admits it is fantastic to be able to be part of the group once again.

“We have both been through some tough periods, but we always come out the other side thanks to our mental strength,” said Mirco.

“I always knew I would be able to get back to playing, I’m happy to be back with the group.

“My brother has shown that he is stronger than ever before, he has earned the right to wear the shirt.”

Flanker Mauro, 34, started Italy’s RBS 6 Nations opener with Wales – a game which they impressed despite going on to lose 23-15.

And he admits after rediscovering his best form the chance to play with his brother again is certainly a reason to keep driving on.

“It’s vital to know why the doors were closed. To shift the blame onto others will do nothing but keep you where you are,” said Mauro.

“Now I have rediscovered the serenity of knowing that I have given my all, I would love to play in the national team with my brother again.”
