Scott Spedding was recalled to the French team after recovering from a knee injury but the full-back knows he needs to keep putting in the performances at club level.

The Clermont player was first choice for France during the World Cup, but has had to settle for a place in the squad so far in the RBS 6 Nations.

He did not make the matchday 23 for the opener against Italy, before twisting his knee in the build-up to the win over Ireland.

France went on to lose their first game of the Championship, against Wales, with their problems under the high ball a particular issue.

While that could play in Spedding’s favour, he insists that his main focus is with Clermont this Friday before returning to Marcoussis to prepare for next Sunday’s clash with Scotland at BT Murrayfield.

He told the Midi Olympique: “Just before the game against Ireland, trying to step, I twisted my knee. Thankfully it wasn’t serious. I was able to train without any problems last week and I’m pleased to be back this week.

“Everyone heard what Guy Novès said: first you have to perform for your club to be able to do anything else.

“So I don’t want to be selfish and think about France rather than Clermont, especially as I’m coming back from injury. I just want to be the best I can and contribute to the team’s performance.

“The most important thing is the team. If I break and pass for someone else to score, I’m as happy as if I scored myself. That’s rugby! But of course, if I have the chance to score my first try for Clermont, I’ll be very happy.”
