Liam Williams and Samson Lee will start for Wales in their Rugby World Cup opener against Uruguay this Sunday after recovering in time from their respective injuries.

Williams impressed at the 2015 RBS 6 Nations before undergoing foot surgery in June, which started a race for fitness ahead of the World Cup.

But he will start in the absence of the injured Leigh Halfpenny at full-back along with tight-head Lee, who had not played since rupturing his Achilles tendon during the Championship.

Elsewhere Sam Warburton and Justin Tipuric – two opensides by trade – will partner up in the back-row in a relatively untried combination by Warren Gatland.

And Gatland has also chosen to rest a number of key men in the likes of Alun Wyn Jones, George North, Jamie Roberts and Taulupe Faletau.

Gareth Davies will get the first crack at replacing Rhys Webb, who scored three tries at the RBS 6 Nations earlier this year but has been ruled out of the World Cup alongside Halfpenny, at scrum-half in partnership with fly-half Rhys Priestland.

Gatland said: “The squad are extremely excited to kick their Rugby World Cup campaign off on Sunday.

“Playing in a World Cup, in your home country, at your home ground is a great honour and I’m sure the players will take that into the game.

“Uruguay will be looking to show what they are capable of and we know we need to be clinical on Sunday.

“It is great to have Liam and Samson back in the starting line-up. They have trained incredibly hard and Sunday is a great opportunity for them.

“It’s a great opportunity for all the players and it’s an exciting time ahead.”   Wales team to face Uruguay 15. Liam Williams 14. Alex Cuthbert 13. Cory Allen 12. Scott Williams 11. Hallam Amos 10.
