FANTASY RUGBY GEEK: FIVE TO WATCH

Speculation around starting XVs is rising and the fantasy game is now live.

Getting off to a fantasy flyer is absolutely key, so a strong selection from the off is needed, but where are you best placed to invest your precious 240 star budget? Here are 5 names that are well worth looking at as strong fantasy assets that will get you off to a flying start in your fantasy point scoring!

The English squad is blessed with talent throughout, and one of the toughest challenges for fantasy players will be to stick to the limit of just 4 players from each country when there is so much fantasy rugby potential to choose from. Despite the array of talent available, Marlie Packer (20 stars) will still be the first name on most team sheets.

Packer’s stats from 2023 demonstrate what an incredible impact she made. She was top tryscorer with 7 tries, the second highest carrying forward in the game with 367m carried, the equal highest breakdown stealer in the game with 7 steals and the 4th highest tackler in the game with 73 over the tournament. Under the new points scoring system, Packer’s all-action style will be well rewarded and even at 20 stars she’s worth all the cost.

Another England player worth marking down for selection is Abby Dow (20 stars). Dow had an outstanding 2023 Women’s Six Nations, which was all the more impressive considering less than a year earlier she had suffered a broken leg. Dow’s 2023 stats speak for themselves; she scored 6 tries, registered 3 assists, carried for an astonishing 722m (the highest of any player in the tournament and by a huge distance), beat 30 defenders and even recorded 2 breakdown steals. She’s been in great from in the PWR this season for Ealing Trailfinders and should make a similar impact in the 2024 Championship.

Another huge attacking threat to highlight is Scotland’s Chloe Rollie (18 stars). Rollie has been a consistent high performer on the international stage in recent years. Her strengths particularly lie in the threat she generates running with the ball. Last year she was behind only Abby Dow for metres carried with 609m carried (indeed only Rollie and Dow carried for over 500m in the 2023 Championship). Even more impressive was Rollie’s defenders beaten, of which she recorded 41 defenders beaten, the highest of any player in the 2023 Championship. This, in addition to her 2 tries, made her one of the most valuable fantasy selections in the 2023 Championship, and you can expect Rollie to be leaving multiple defenders in her wake again in 2024.

France, like England, have huge talent in depth in their squad, but one player that has got to make most fantasy teams is their Centre Gabrielle Vernier (20 stars). Vernier was the top scoring Centre in the game last year and is a truly top-class fantasy option. She played every minute of France’s 2023 campaign, and in this time scored 5 tries, gathered 2 assists, carried for 322 metres, beat 20 defenders, made 55 tackles and won 4 breakdown steals. An all-rounder with skills like these is absolutely priceless in the Guinness Women’s Six Nations fantasy game, and like others in this list, despite the considerable price tag, she is well worth investing you 240 star budget in.

Last on this list is an option from Wales, Bethan Lewis (15 stars). Lewis was a rock in the Wales forwards last year alongside the likes of Alex Callender and Georgia Evans and she was the equal highest ranked player in terms of breakdown steals (equal with Marlie Packer) with 7 over the tournament. With 5 points available for every breakdown steal, this is fantasy gold and so Lewis will be an excellent addition to any back row. Away from the breakdown Lewis also recorded 1 try, 2 assists, 225 metres carried and 51 tackles made.
